Every minute a refuse-truckload of plastic waste ends up in the sea. Some 79,000 tons of plastic and other waste is now floating around in our seas and oceans. Clumped together its surface area would be 50 times that of Belgium! Arne Deforce's concert is divided into two by an all-revealing documentary about this plastic soup. The title of Kaija Saariaho's Près is a reference to Paul Gauguin’s Près de la mer, which has a pristine sea as its background. A new composition completes this diptych, which highlights the madness of 'The Great Pacific Garbage Patch'.
