For his The Sinking of the Titanic British composer Gavin Bryars dipped his pen in the inkwell of despair. In it he gradually drowns an endless hymn in Morse code and alienating sound effects that subtly affect the emotions. The same intoxicating trance effect can be found in Steve Reich's rarely performed Tehillim. In this masterpiece, the American grandmaster weaves complex rhythms and Hebrew prayers into a repetitive fabric. Add those to Reich's Proverb and Charles Ives' musical contemplation of our raison d'être The Unanswered Question and you can be sure of an intense experience.
