Who could forget how Fischer unravelled the secrets of Mahler's Fifth Symphony in 2012 - in fluent Dutch! - before he led his Budapest Festival Orchestra through a red-hot performance of this masterpiece? Following the same format, the BFO now turn the spotlight on Bartok's pantomime The Miraculous Mandarin. At its premiere this work caused quite a scandal because of its - as Bartók himself described it – ‘hellish music’ and because of its macabre and nihilistic tale of seduction, violence and ultimate redemption. A young girl lures a mandarin into a brothel, where he is beaten and robbed by thieves and eventually murdered. The extremely aggressive, dissonant and rhythmic tonal language and frightening but delicate orchestral coloration greatly reinforce the story’s sumptuous lasciviousness. Besides the tremendous, breathtaking orchestra, this performance also features the choreography of controversial Hungarian contemporary dancer Krisztian Gergye. Truly sensational!
