A fine tribute to the human imagination

In 2011, as curator of its 5th edition, Akram Khan opened December Dance with a Concertgebouw coproduction: DESH. 'Magical, masterly, stunning, impressive, fascinating...’ DESH was showered with superlatives and won international awards. Akram Khan and Sue Buckmaster have meanwhile created a wonderful adaptation for families and children: Chotto Desh, or ‘the little homeland’. In a magical mix of dance, word and visuals, Chotto Desh tells the compelling tale of the dreams of a child growing up in England, within a family with Bangladeshi roots. But what if he had really listened to his father? The visual design is by Chinese designer Tim Yip, who won the Oscar for Best Art Direction for his work on the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Jocelyn Pook, composer of, among other things, the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, arranged the music. Chotto Desh is a fine tribute to the human imagination.
