Tradition has it that Luther made his revolutionary position public on the eve of All Saints Day. That made 31 October the ‘anniversary’ of the Lutheran Church and the occasion for several of Bach’s most imposing cantatas. Collegium Vocale Ghent opens Bach Academy Bruges in a festive manner with the Overture for trumpets and tympani, followed by one of Bach’s Reformationsfest works, Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild. After the interval we hear the Missa Brevis that was probably performed during the same service in Leipzig.
