Drumming – based on Steve Reich's minimalist percussion score of the same name – is one of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's most iconic choreographies. The music starts with a single obsessive, rhythmic motif that multiplies and unfolds in a rich variety of textures, among them, drums, wood, metal and voice. Reich pushes the technique he had applied earlier in Piano Phase to the extreme: slight accelerations almost imperceptibly disrupt the musicians’ unison, creating an endless game of canons. In the choreography the complexity arises in a similar way: endless variations in time and space grow from a single movement. It is only when the music and the bodies come to a standstill that the audience realise what they have experienced: a wave of pure dance and pure sound, a vortex of life energy.
