Furioso, by Australian choreographer Meryl Tankard, became a world sensation thanks to its virtuoso choreography, partly performed on ropes in the air. It is a fiery and passionate piece of dance theatre, in which the boundaries of masculinity and femininity are pushed to the limit.
In the poignant aria 'When I am Laid in Earth', from Henry Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, the mythical queen Dido laments her fate. Her lover Aeneas has sailed away. She is heartbroken and sees no other course but suicide. For his moving duet, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui drew his inspiration from Purcell's music and lyrics, but simultaneously created a touching tribute to Pina Bausch, one of the 20th century’s most iconic choreographers. The aria was the dramatic highlight of Bausch’s famous Café Müller.
