Jazz Brugge - Friday

On the first festival evening Jazz Brugge pays a visit to our upstairs neighbours. Under the Surface are the most talked-about vocal improvisation trio currently active in the Netherlands. The combination of Joost Lijbaart’s percussion, Bram Stadhouders’ guitar and Sanne Rambags’ haunting voice guarantees us a kaleidoscopic musical adventure. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin bring us pure 'zen-funk', as their inventive stripped-down and layered new jazz has been dubbed. Ronin often present drawn-out meditations on a theme, in which minor shifts can give their listeners major goose bumps. Arifa exemplify the way in which jazz can renew itself via non-Western influences.
