When he arrived in Rome, Handel found that his solid reputation had preceded him. Thanks to some helpful connections, he was immediately able set to work with the best musicians. At the premiere of Il trionfo del Tempo, for example, the orchestra was led by revered violinist Arcangelo Corelli. Composing with Corelli in mind, Handel took full advantage of that master’s virtuosic ability and innovative style and pushed him to the limit. Musica Gloria, the ensemble founded by Bruges’ own Beniamino Paganini – the Belgian music press’s Young Musician of the Year 2020 – cleverly juxtapose the two geniuses and bring out the best of both.
