Just before he died, Stefan Hertmans’ grandfather gave him a couple of old notebooks filled with writing. When he opened them, Hertmans discovered moving memories of an impoverished childhood in Ghent, gruesome experiences as a soldier at the front in World War I, and a great love who died young. Hertmans’ years of fascination with his grandfather’s life ultimately inspired him to write War and Turpentine. Jan Lauwers has adapted this gripping epic for the stage. The accompanying music is a new composition by Rombout Willems.
