Dance performance inspired by Flemish electronic music from the 1970s

Prototype is a dance performance based on the work of maverick composer and pioneer of Flemish electronic music Lucien Goethals (1931-2006). Sound designer Daniel Vanverre - with whom choreographer Marc Vanrunxt also worked on Discografie (2013) - manipulates Goethals’ sound tapes live on stage. The performance is a trip through time, back to what in the 70s was – and perhaps still sounds like - the music of the future. Set designer Koenraad Dedobbeleer’s stage setting was inspired by the work of American painter Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015). Kelly’s work was and is crucial to Vanrunxt’s development as a choreographer. Kelly's striving for abstraction is hard to translate into dance. Dance is never abstract: there are always live dancers on stage. And that’s exactly why Vanrunxt finds the search for abstraction in dance such a fascinating challenge.
