With a short explanation by Jan Christiaens in the Concert hall after the first part. |
Complex fugues are a matter of course in Beethoven's late work. Sometimes they are bursting at the seams, as in his String Quartet no. 13. His publisher found it too imposing and too demanding. Beethoven obligingly provided the quartet with a shorter and lighter ending. He then stubbornly published the original finale separately under the title Große Fuge. In this concert Quatuor Ebène reunite the pieces.
