Gabriel Fauré’s grandiose and heartfelt Requiem is often called ‘a lullaby of death’. Belgian composer Wim Hendrickx arranges this consoling requiem for the choir Opera Vlaanderen and HERMESensemble and enriches it with an orientally inspired commentary. The cultural differences between East and West are the basis of choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Requiem. Both in the Requiem - with its poignant Pie Jesu for soprano - and in Rimsky-Korsakov's Shahrazad the strength of woman is central. In Shahrazad Tunisian-American choreographer Jonah Bokaer sees the embodiment of a basic human urge for self-expression. That is Bokaer’s central theme in his masterpiece on the border between East and West.
