Besides being a dancer-choreographer, Brazilian artist Pol Pi is also a classically trained violist. In Schönheit ist Nebensache, he creates an extraordinary dialogue between a viola sonata, by German composer Paul Hindemith, and the dance cycle Afectos Humanos, by German expressionist choreographer Dore Hoyer. Both works consist of five short solos, which Pol Pi alternately dances and performs on viola. He interweaves them with letters from Hindemith and Hoyer that reflect their experiencing of totalitarian regimes. Music, dance and words combine to form a delicate trio, turning this work into an intimate solo with a political layer.
