Scientist and artist provide food for thought

Architecture intervenes in nature. Man-made constructions change the natural landscape; sometimes drastically, sometimes subtly. On the occasion of 600 years of KU Leuven, the artist and architect duo Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh realised a permanent installation in the park around Arenberg Castle in Heverlee. Their wandering garden is a steel structure gradually overgrown by carefully selected plants. The whole becomes an organic maze that changes with the seasons and the years. Crucial to this project is the collaboration with scientists in different disciplines.

During this fourth edition of Serieus Curieus, professor emeritus of bio-engineering Martin Hermy and architect Arnout Van Vaerenbergh reflect on this meeting between science and art. How do the artistic and scientific sides of human creativity relate to each other? And how do they see the interplay between architecture and nature? Koen Fillet asks them the questions you might also be asking yourself.
