'‘I love it as I have never loved my other musical descendants,’ wrote Tchaikovsky about his Symphonie pathétique. Due to his untimely death just a week after its premiere, some see the work as Tchaikovsky’s farewell to the world. Personal requiem or not, sadness and despair never sounded so beautiful. Equally iconic is Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto no. 1, with its famous ecstatic opening chords and sweet-voiced orchestral melody, both of which are etched into our collective memory.
