In his Goldberg Variations, Bach explores the multiple ways of improvising on a musical theme. Together with Pavel Kolesnikov, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker reduces the 16-dancer line-up of her previous Bach-based creation, The Six Brandenburg Concertos, to a solo performance. With a single aria and thirty variations, the music challenges the dance to do what Bach has done: find organised form in constant variation. For De Keersmaeker, it is an invitation to bring together the path already trod and current questions, in the ongoing search for her own dance language.
