There are many known worlds, and more are constantly being added. In The Rise, composer Eva Reiter and choreographer Michiel Vandevelde create a new world, based on a series of poems by Nobel Prize winner Louise Glück. The master of ceremonies is a deaf actor and translation wizard. His gestures are automatically translated into sound and movement, and vice versa. That mechanism of echoes and mediation is central; it leads to the emergence of new musical instruments, new harmonies, grammar, rhetoric and even politics.
