In Bach's monumental St Matthew Passion, tradition and innovation are fused into an awe-inspiring construction that is among the most moving music ever written. The work meanders between reflective and dramatic recitatives, lyrical and contemplative arias and devout chorales, and elevates the age-old Passion story – in words that still touch us today – into a universal message about suffering and consolation. Even Nietzsche was impressed: ‘Those who have completely forgotten Christianity hear it here as gospel,’ he wrote in 1902, after he had declared Bach ‘divine’. For Bach's double choir masterpiece, resident artist Vox Luminis join their voices with of one of Europe's most legendary Baroque orchestras, led for the occasion by their musical directors from the outset Petra Müllejans and Gottfried von der Goltz.
