Choreographer Robyn Orlin grew up in a South Africa torn by apartheid. Scenes of young Zulus pulling rickshaws full of white folk were commonplace in her youth. What struck her most about this was not so much the exploitation of these young black men as the willpower that enabled them to withstand humiliation. By sharing these memories with a generation of young South African dancers, Robyn Orlin shows us in this performance that artistic self-expression is still a weapon in the fight for dignity and equality.
