That names like Galina Ustvolskaya and Valentin Silvestrov ring a bell with Western audiences is largely thanks to Alexei Lubimov. Like a ‘roving ambassador’, he tirelessly travels the world promoting Russian music. In this concert he shares the stage with the young musicians of Studio for New Music Moscow. They shine together in the sun-drenched romantic sextet, by Mikhail Glinka, who is himself an excellent pianist. Lubimov, however, is at his best when he can popularise brand-new music, together with young musicians. Pavel Karmanov enchants the listener with a colourful story of love and hate: from hypnotic minimalism, to polished neoclassicism, to powerful, armed-to-the-teeth eruptions of sound. Right up Lubimov and his associates’ street!
