For the Russian intelligentsia, chamber music was almost as trivial as ballet. Tchaikovsky, however, delivered outstanding Russian pioneering work in this field. His First String Quartet was a huge success in Russia and even more so abroad. The key to its success is its immensely popular Andante cantabile, a beautiful setting of a Russian folk song. Shostakovich and Raskatov had to deal with a disapproving Soviet regime. After Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony was censored, his Third String Quartet was also criticised, because in it Shostakovich obliquely refers to the Soviet Union’s terrible abuses. Shostakovich nevertheless considered this quartet to be one of his best works. The Amon String Quartet glitter in this outstanding selection of Russian quartets.
