Vocal fireworks from a legendary symphonist

Following on from Anima's masterly Masterpiece Week, featuring Beethoven's Ninth, this programme brings us the maestro’s Seventh Symphony – a favourite among contemporaries – and his jubilant Choral Fantasy. With his grand Mass in C, commissioned by the illustrious Esterházy family, Beethoven was following in the footsteps of Joseph Haydn. His goal of setting the liturgical text to music ‘in a manner in which it has rarely been treated’, resulted in an impressive score full of contrasts that hover between fear and redemption.
