Emotion and silence meet in Kris Defoort’s first symphony Human Voices Only. He drew his inspiration for it from the immeasurable variations of the chants he heard during Ramadan in Morocco: voices that never stop, loudness and intimacy, the rebellion of the human voice. Equally stunning is the oceanic music of John Luther Adams. For 45 minutes his Become Ocean immerses us in a gigantic wave of sound. Less turbulent is Beethoven’s wonderful Violin Concerto. With Josef Špaček, the grandness and breadth of the score is in the very best hands.
