American Bang on a Can composer David Lang is fascinated by Beethoven's only opera: Fidelio. Taking that work – originally composed for chamber orchestra, large male choir and four soloists – as his basis, Lang constructs a brand-new musical drama. The abuses it portrays are topical and of all times. The orchestra is both actor and eyewitness in a chronicle of an evil government and the fall of a political tyrant.
