Programming the Borodin Quartet, creates expectations. This Russian quartet has been around in varying line-ups for 70 years and, back in the day, actually worked closely with Shostakovich himself. Its members are all acknowledged Shostakovich experts and so naturally one of his string quartets is on their programme. Shostakovich's last string quartet is some of the most poignant music he ever wrote. Beethoven’s 15th and final string quartet is regarded as extremely exciting and compelling. He composed its third movement - a solemn, chorale-like adagio of an unearthly beauty – after a long and serious illness. With the Russians of the Borodin Quartet, intensity and depth reign supreme!
