Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps caused a riot at its premiere in 1913. Edgar Varèse’s Amériques – a tour de force for a huge orchestra, with no fewer than 14 percussionists – was greeted with similar hostility. That raw, seismic force was unlike anything previously heard. It created a shock wave. Was Varése ahead of his time? He didn’t think so: ‘An artist is never ahead of his time, but most people are far behind theirs.’ Concertgebouw Creator Tom De Cock, a percussionist, talks about this work and then mounts the conductor’s dais to guide this orchestral colossus. Brace yourself for timeless mastery!
