Whether Liszt's early concerto for piano and strings, Malédiction, lives up to its name and is cursed is not such a frivolous question. Liszt never got to hear this exceptionally virtuoso work full of mood swings performed in public, because it was only published after his death. That was not the case for Strauss and his Metamorphoses. These drip with the sorrow of war, the melancholy strings reverberating a deep sadness about all that has been lost. Pēteris Vasks drenches Viatore in the same despondency and restless musical murmuring.
