‘Even the overly-familiar Adagietto sounds as fresh as if it were 1902,’ wrote one reviewer about Fischer's recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Its yearning strings were given a tragic connotation by the film Death in Venice, whereas in reality they were meant to be a passionate love letter from Mahler to his wife Alma. This most Jewish of Mahler’s symphonies takes the listener on an emotional journey, from the lament in the first movement to a childlike vision of messianic joy in the finale.
