‘Ich fühle Luft von anderem Planeten’ – I feel the air of other planets – sings the soprano in Schoenberg's Second String Quartet. Its almost unearthly sound, with the addition of that singing voice, shocked its initial Viennese audience. Dvořák’s Twelfth String Quartet was not from another planet, but from a 'new world' - the United States. Its highlight is the sublime Lento, the slow sustained pulsing tension of which provides the perfect counterweight to the irresistible energy of its other movements.
