In 1788 Mozart wrote his three last symphonies – among them the 39th – in a record time of less than two months. Three masterpieces of such a different character and dimension in such a short space of time… that is almost unimaginable. Three years earlier he filled the pages of his sensational Piano Concerto no. 20 with dark demonic menace. Furious thumps on the keyboard but also tender caresses.
