Who remembers Halim El-Dabh? Where are the monographs and festivals celebrating the work of this Egyptian pioneer of 20th-century music? Jasmina Metwaly’s film investigates why El-Dabh has not been given an honoured place in music history. Central to the film is his classic Leiyla and the Poet, which was a source of inspiration for many who came after him. Season’s Composer Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman’s soundscape Maria Mariza and maybe Marianna is related to El-Dabh’s music. In that work she sculpts a selection of dislocated voices, field recordings and found sounds into an unearthly musical narrative.
