Confronting the music of 11th-century German mystic Hildegard von Bingen with that of 20th-century Russian Galina Ustvolskaya is sure to result in unprecedented radicalism. Although their music is very different in language and medium, both composers wrote music out of the same inner need: they were both sounding out the tense reciprocity between temptation and hope, between the everyday and the ecstatic. Het Collectief and the singers of Psallentes set von Bingen’s extravagantly virtuoso Gregorian sounds alongside Ustvolskaya’s excessive style and thus bring to life an entirely new and surprising sound world. A unique cross-pollination between two musical grandes dames.
