The poetry of Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374) has inspired composers for centuries. Paul Van Nevel lets us hear how the sonnets of that great humanist were read by composers in the 16th century. A notable absentee from this programme is Adriaan Willaert – his Petrarch-rich Musica Nova is the masterpiece featured tomorrow by the ensemble Dionysos Now! – but otherwise all the stars are included: Lassus, De Wert, Marenzio… but also Tudino, Vicentino and even a few new compositions by, among others, Willem Ceuleers.
Poetry by Francesco Petrarch to music by Roland de Lassus (1532-1594), Giaches De Wert (1535-1596), Luca Marenzio (ca.1553-1599) and others
