Night brings peace and tranquillity, but also darkness, dreams, death… and other things that shy away from the light of day. In Schubert's Nachtstück, for example, an old man bids farewell to life. And in Schubert's Ständchen a yearning lover sings ‘Softly my songs plead to you through the night’. Alban Berg also saw the night as a facilitator of love. His highly sensual Sieben frühe Lieder are steeped in the ecstasy of love and erotic delight. The Romantic song repertoire is brimming with nightly serenades and escapade. With Ilse Eerens and Inge Spinette they are in gentle hands.
