‘It is my motto to play on a good instrument, or not at all,’ wrote Beethoven in 1810. Jos van Immerseel, who celebrates his 75th birthday this year, therefore cast a critical eye over Beethoven’s keyboard works: Which work was created when? And on which keyboard? After all, Immerseel does know the qualities of a good historical instrument better than anyone. When he tried Antwerp’s original Conrad Graf pianoforte at the beginning of his long career, he said it was ‘as if I was learning to play the piano again’.
