Giovanni Arnolfini's Choirbook reached Italy thanks to John Hothby. This English composer, singer and musical theorist made such a name for himself in Bruges that Lucca Cathedral was eager to hire him. And so, led by an Englishman, Italian vocalists started to sing ‘northern’ music. La Fonte Musica explore how that may have sounded in, among other things, a Mass by Heyns and motets by Dufay. From Hothby himself we hear Una panthera, a reference to the City of Lucca's coat of arms.
Motets, madrigals and Mass excerpts, by Cornelis Heyns, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Ciconia & John Hothby
