Woman reduced to sweetheart, wife and mother: nowadays, such a text would immediately be torn apart for being sexist. Chamisso's bland and anonymous wife even ceases to exist after her husband dies, as her role is then apparently over. Not very female friendly. This cycle, however, still has much to interest us – apart from its beautiful melodies – because in it we can feel how very much Robert Schumann loved his Clara, so much so that he even took her father to court to win the right to marry her. A passionate late-nighter.
