Hans Christian Andersen's sad story about the little mermaid inspired Zemlinsky to compose a compelling symphonic poem. With telling notes, he paints the torrid yearning and unconcealed eroticism of a story of love, suffering and sacrifice. Equally epic is Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto. Technically searing and emotionally exhausting, it is just about the highest cliff any pianist can climb. Lukáš Vondráček won the Queen Elisabeth Competition with it. He plays it tenderly when possible, forcefully when necessary, but always irresistibly convincingly.
