For years Quatuor Danel have interpreted the string quartets of Shostakovich and Weinberg. They are meanwhile expert in this universal and timeless music. The string quartets of both composers echo not only the threat posed by the Soviet state and sorrow about pointlessly murdered loved ones, but also the fight against injustice and the hope of a better world. In Shostakovich's first quartet, he ’visualised childhood scenes, somewhat naïve, and bright moods associated with spring’. Occasionally, however, dark and tormented passages slide like clouds before the sun. In his dark war quartet - an in memoriam for violinist Ferdinand Laub, a musical friend of Tchaikovsky – Weinberg occasionally brings a blissful smile to one’s face. Then you feel the connection with Tchaikovsky, who also effortlessly reconciles his mourning for a dear friend with appreciative memories.
