Part of Dagpas Deep Listening 1
In the early 18th century, the sultan of Morocco brought a group of enslaved Gnawa to his country, where they embraced Islamic culture without completely abandoning their own traditions. Meanwhile, the Gnawa community is still alive and kicking - as the Brussels branch could be heard at SLOW earlier this year. Hélène Sechehaye, co-founder of the Belgian branch of the illustrious International Council for Traditional Music, knows their musical traditions like no other. In her lecture, she will discuss the songs, the costumes, the instruments and the places where the music sounded and sounds.
During each Deep Listening Day, Concertgebouw Brugge – in collaboration with the Belgian branch of the International Council for Traditional Music – offers audiences an insight into musical traditions from near and far. Travel with your ears to a world of pure imagination.
