‘Bronfman the brontosaur!’ American novelist Philip Roth could not have described this born pianist more aptly. From the first note of Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, Bronfman grabs you by the scruff of the neck with a bravado and control that leaves you open-mouthed. Ever since Beethoven, the ninth symphony has become something of a superstition. It is said that it will be the composer’s last work. The deeply religious Bruckner probably took no account of this. He commenced his own Ninth Symphony, but died before he finished it. It nevertheless resounds through music history.
