Sona Jobarteh has clearly found her own voice. As the first female professional kora player in a family of griots – African storyteller-poet-musicians – she champions self-awareness and self-development. That is why she founded the Gambia Academy, a school that uses culture as a gateway to the education and empowerment of the young generation. Above all, however, she is a fantastic musician who has one foot in a 700-year-old family tradition and the other in a legacy for the future.
