Three times sorrow sublimates into pure beauty, in the form of a Russian piano trio. The Netherlands’ Storioni Trio sound out the depth of these elegies, setting the haunting Trio élégiaque, an early Rachmaninov work, alongside two legendary piano trios by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. Each is a poignant homage, composed as a fond farewell to a good musical friend. In eleven variations, Tchaikovsky conveys memories of the life and the personality of his friend the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein: they culminate in an impressive and moving finale. For his tribute to his best friend, the musicologist Ivan Sollertinsky, Shostakovich created, among other things, a desolate soundscape, followed by a heartrending danse macabre.
