Thanks to its many canals, Bruges – with a little exaggeration – is sometimes called the Venice of the North. But there is actually more to that statement than we might at first think. Venetian merchants first set foot in Bruges in the early 14th century. Once here, they not only contributed to the city’s economic boom, they also left an enduring mark.
