Audience favourite Akram Khan tackles gender and sexuality, in his own inimitable dance style

Akram Khan - curator of December Dance 11 and a welcome guest in Bruges - has to be part of any festival that focuses on the British dance scene. During the Belgian premiere of this Concertgebouw coproduction, Khan himself took to the stage! In Until the Lions the now 41-year old dancer-choreographer tackles the changing body: from young to old, from man to woman. Gender and sexuality were long taboo topics for Khan, who was given a traditional upbringing in England by his Bengali parents. But now that he is older, he is finally able to focus on such issues. He does so via his very own dance style: a mix of classical Indian Kathak and contemporary dance. An important source of inspiration was Karthika Nair’s book Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata, particularly the story of Amba, who is undergoing a transformation. For this production Khan has reunited part of the team with whom he made his award-winning DESH: visual artist Tim Yip, lighting designer Michael Hulls and dramaturge Ruth Little.
