Famous composers come in all shapes and sizes, but Roland de Lassus is probably the greatest of all the medieval and Renaissance composers. And he reached his place at the top of the artistic ladder – on an equal footing with his contemporary Pierluigi da Palestrina – in his own lifetime. Albrecht V of Bavaria was therefore overjoyed when he convinced the renowned singer-composer to come to Munich. Lassus's pièce de résistance was his penitential psalms, prestigious music intended for only the noblest of ears. The scores were written down exclusively for Duke Albrecht in a costly manuscript and were only revealed to the wider world much later. In Lassus’s Psalmi, the plea for forgiveness sounds wonderfully topical, clear and personal. In this concert, conducted by Daniel Reuss, the unsurpassed Vocalconsort Berlin add a new chapter to their success story. With this self-proclaimed 'non-specialist', Lassus's perfect balance between text and music is in the very best of hands.
