It is nigh on impossible to imagine a more iconic ‘Dido’ than Jessye Norman. When asked to commission a work for Carnegie Hall, Norman invited three other black female role models – Maya Angelou, Clarissa Pinkola Estés and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison – to write new lyrics for the song cycle Woman.Life.Song. For this lecture, Neske Beks has selected texts by Angelou, Estés and Morrison and from her own work on the lives of women, white and black. Its central theme are the questions: What is a woman's life? And what is the power of being a woman?
