In his Fourth Symphony an emotionally tormented Tchaikovsky expresses his sense of not belonging anywhere: turbulent storms, cutting loneliness, but then – despite everything – a heroic, almost Beethovenian ending. Equally epic is Rachmaninov's nimble-fingered Third Piano Concerto, which is tinged with nostalgia and is much loved for its compelling melodies. After a so-called ‘simple’ opening melody, it soon erupts into virtuoso streams of notes and roaring passion. Perfectly suited to Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort's able hands.
