When Alban Berg was starting his violin concerto, Alma Mahler’s daughter – of whom Berg was very fond – died. Pain transformed into creativity and a few weeks later Berg’s heart-breaking concerto Dem Andenken eines Engels was finished. The Enigma Variations also have a dark side, which composer Elgar said should be left unspoken. A sense of loneliness, to which every artist succumbs, sets the tone. Fortunately, Schubert is also on hand with his gracefully dancing Rosamunde Overture, which is brimming with the joy of life.
